Reflecting on the words of Oprah Winfrey – “Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity” The 5 tips below are part of the preparation to enable this luck to meet your retirement-enjoyment opportunity.
Organise your finances
Finances have two aspects – income and expenditure. You can review your finances to create opportunities, and to expand your income through alternative sources. These may vary from person to person depending on: passion, skills and interests. Any small and consistent additional income you earn can change and enhance your preparedness for retirement. Revisit your expenditures, then and identify those adjustments you can make. Any savings made may help you to pay the loan earlier, create additional saving that can be invested; and most importantly the savings may enable you to visualise the adjustments to make in your retirement goal.
Prepare for good and bad times
Preparing for retirement is like preparing for any other projects. Each project will have its up-side and down-side moments. Use the down-side moments to learn, be equipped; and to get up with enthusiasm and will-power to take corrective action and move on. Be determined, then, to shine again; most people are already known to have picked a a project from grass to grace.
Develop routine habits
A habit is something that you usually do regularly. Habits enable us to have a stable routine in our lives. Simple habits include what you do when get out of bed every morning: brushing your teeth, taking a shower, dressing up, making and taking breakfast and setting off to work. You need to identify and nurture your retirement habits by: building habit change awareness, knowing why the habit is important to you, identifying particular habits to make your life better, attaching the new habit to something you regularly do; and then starting to implement the new habit. Remember, you are either starting a new habit or you are breaking an existing one; therefore, consistency is key.
Keep your body and mind active
To keep the body active requires some level of regular activity or exercise. This can be working in your garden; as well as light-to-heavy exercises such as walking, jogging and running. For the mind, you can read materials of your interest (articles, books etc), learn a new skill, acquire new knowledge, find something you enjoy; and then learn and do it. It is recommended that you do at least 150 minutes of moderate-to-intensity exercises every week.
Practice gratitude
This basically involves paying attention to appreciating the good things within yourself and around you. You can easily do this by being observant in order to notice and appreciate them. Express gratitude to yourself and what is positive around you, by listing the things you have, love, like; and that you are grateful for. You can express your appreciation through prayer, meditation or affirmation. This will promote positive energy towards a sense of fulfilment and accomplishment.
